Music of the Week #503

The balls starts rolling

Finally got the Bayo and Vanquish post out

With that, a rather larger post is coming pretty soon but I want to put more effort into the pictures I choose for this one. Alternatively, I can pick out a smaller game to post next instead, we’ll see how it goes with how much pictures I can pick out properly before next week.

This week’s tune covers one of the more specific joys of Mario RPGs in that I absolutely adore the tropical island setting in both Paper Maro RPGs. Lavalava Island definitely delivers in how vast its jungles are with multiple screens, probably not as much as Dry Dry Desert, but has a ton of neat little things hidden around with it small camps of spear-wielding Jungle Shy Guys. Raphael the Raven from the Yoshi continuity shows up here to help and the Yoshi Village is a nice location that I wish got more time to shine since Yoshis don’t tend to be common elements in Paper Mario after the first game. We’ll talk about Keyhaul Keel when we get there because I love that chapter too.

It’s time

I think a week’s break from any serious typing has gotten me in the mood for some goddamn videogames so hopefully before next week’s post I’ll have something up hopefully. Summer is almost here too and I already don’t really see anything I want to watch, which means more time for games.

I mentioned a character named Twink last week and how he acts as the messenger between Peach and Mario between chapters, which becomes a trend with Peach in the sequel as well. Twink has his own little arc of wanting to become a star spirit himself and got himself into a bit of trouble a while back when a fan’s attempt to re-texture the game in an HD style basically replaced him and all the star spirits as Lumas from Mario Galaxy’s continuity. Song-wise, I always remember the tune around 13-14 seconds in that synced up with Twink flying up back to Bowser’s castle always fitting.

Music of the Week #500-501

Oh boy

I had some final things to mess around with before I got my break. I said this before but all I’ve been doing is typing so I’ll give myself a slight break on typing more before I go finishing up the posts I’ve been wanting to post since January soon. Beyond that, last week’s Nagatoro was a bit better than the previous ones since it didn’t skip around as much. If I wasn’t in such a rush to get more games in my system, I might be able to watch that TWEWY adaptation soon.

Fortunately, last week’s and this week’s themes are renditions of each other. Paper Mario was notable in actually giving some initiative on Princess Peach’s end to help Mario in his quest by snooping around and sneaking information and items with the assistance of a star child named Twink. Part of the reasons these sections are so memorable is that these neat little themes play while you take control of Peach and sneak around guards with flashlights as you go around specific rooms per chapter to try and discover some hints as to what Mario needs to do to proceed to the next chapter. I remember in one occasion Peach takes part in a game show while in another one she got to decide what “mario hated” so answering with helpful items made enemies drop certain high level items during that chapter dungeon.
